Gotham Magazine Spreads

This was University project I was given. each person was given a specific typeface. Mine was Gotham. Gotham was deigned by Tobias Frere-Jones in 2000. Gotham is characterised by its very generous x-height which makes it very easy to read at small sizes. The inspiration for Gotham came from Architectural signage that is very popular throughout New York. Frere-Jones credits most of all the Eighth Avenue of Port Authority New York Bus Terminal which inspired the Gotham project. We first started by experimenting with layouts which we thought could work, but week by week we was given some more information we had to include. So we had to think about hierarchy of out magazine design. We had to think about letter spacing, leading and also the basic rules of typography. Some of the things we Had to adjust optically with our eyes to make it look right and sitted correctly on the page.
