YCN Crisis Brief

I decided to do a direct mail to people house in the form of a pay cheque. The message was it can happen to any one at any time. How would you feel if your pay cheque had a lot of zeros in it? You had no National Insurance and no health benefits. In a way you have slipper out of the system.

National Coal Mining Museum

In University we had to create a promotion for The National Coal Mining Museum. I was going to do a direct mail to people house with a packet of soap, implying that you might get dirty after you have visited the museum like the coal miners did. The logo was implying, by the fade light to dark you are getting deeper in the tunnel pits. Also some of the letter a slightly eroded, as the pick axes would chip a the walls.

Concept Studies

In my concept Studies. The idea behind my Concept was, I got a book and turned to any random page in the book. The page I landed on I had to record the bus journey on it recording the sops the bus stopped at. I The took the bus number, 236 and got off at the last stop. I then took 236 paces and took a photography of what i saw.

Photography

These are the Photography Pinhole camera Photographs. I took the starting Photographs using the Pinhole camera messing around with the light exposure and the time exposed for. Each different location required different amounts of time exposed due to the light in the room. I then exposed more and more elements adding layers to the images.

Group Logo Project

This was a group Project we have been doing in university recently. My group consisted of Mike Mara, Grace O'Malley, Nicola Foster and me. We had to design a logo choosing a location and an event and combining them together. Our event was Bowling and our location was New York City, this was done by using to crown of the Statue of Liberty in a stylised way. I really like our idea as it looks like the Bowling ball is also creating impact.

Character Illustrations

We had to choose a member of our group and illustrate them, using less features as we could, but still capturing the person so you can recognise them still. We had to use a quote from Abram Games "Maximum Meaning, Minimal Means". I feel that i have captured both me and Mike really well using our most recognisable features.

Typeface

These are some of my typeface I have created. I got inspiration for Faith from a Church window in Manchester Town Center. I got inspiration from Chronicles from a Paperclip I was messing around with in lesson, when I noticed I could manipulate it to make letter for my alphabet.

Need For Speed

This was an editorial project we had to produce with in a day. The idea was to get across the order of the information using a hierarchy. We got give all the information and the pictures but we had to produce the layout. The article is about drugs use in sport to enhance performance. So I used the idea of picking out the 'O' and turning it into a pill. Which I thought was a very subtle idea. Also the text is shape as a syringe. I also kept the theme of colour so it kept in fitting with the page.

Gotham Magazine Spreads

This was University project I was given. each person was given a specific typeface. Mine was Gotham. Gotham was deigned by Tobias Frere-Jones in 2000. Gotham is characterised by its very generous x-height which makes it very easy to read at small sizes. The inspiration for Gotham came from Architectural signage that is very popular throughout New York. Frere-Jones credits most of all the Eighth Avenue of Port Authority New York Bus Terminal which inspired the Gotham project. We first started by experimenting with layouts which we thought could work, but week by week we was given some more information we had to include. So we had to think about hierarchy of out magazine design. We had to think about letter spacing, leading and also the basic rules of typography. Some of the things we Had to adjust optically with our eyes to make it look right and sitted correctly on the page.

Manchester Literature Festival

This was a project that I did at college. It was to design a poster to advertise the public that there was a Manchester Literature Festival taking place. The final poster were judged by members off the Literature Festival. I enjoyed doing this project because it got me to think about the tiny detail in type anatomy, thinking about letter- spacing to leading. Also thinking about structure and hierarchy of information.

Magazine New Scientist

These are my Magazine Layout I did for the complete re-branding of The New Scientist Magazine. I was really happy with the overall outcome of the magazine. I feel the magazine the same feel throughout. I created the imagery by photocopying my face and moving it along with the beam of light. I the edited the picture in Photoshop.
