Liverpool Design Symposium

On the 23rd of October Stockport College second and third year Graphics Degree, went on a trip to visit Liverpool Biennial Awards. Also we gained tickets to go to two lectures By Bruno Magg from Dalton Magg and Matt Pyke From Universal Everything.
There was an early start at 7.30 we had to meet at Stockport College to catch the coach down to Liverpool. James from Thoughtful met us in Liverpool. The design agency Thoughtful art directed the Liverpool Biennial. First of all we went to see the Liverpool Tate. So we went inside the Tate and let James give us a tour and talk about the work they have done art directing the Liverpool Biennial. After the Tate we moved on to different locations around Liverpool centre, because different pieces of work were in different locations around Liverpool.
It was time to go to our first lecture of the day by Bruno Maag from Dalton Maag. Dalton Maag have offices in London and Zurich. Bruno Maag is a fanatic Type Enthusiast. I found this talk to be very inspirational. As I am being to get really involved in Type Design myself. He talked about all different aspects of type. He talked about how mu
ch type can affect the object itself, for example he said "If something is wrote in scruffy handwriting on a board for a fire extinguisher. Would it make you feel safe?" Bruno Maag then went on about the rules of Typography saying that when you uses typography you should be exact, using the correct punctuation in the correct places. He particular partial to using En and Em dashes in the correct places:
  • The en dash is roughly the width on the letter n. the en dash is used in ranges, such as 6-10 years, reading as "6 to 10 years".
  • The em dash is twice the size of an en dash. it often sets the boundaries of a thought.
Bruno Maag then went on showing us examples of his work for BMW and BMW Minis and Vodafone and Dubai International Airport.

He then some of some pictures of type crime, his reaction to some of theses pictures where very funny. One picture Bruno shown us was the Trajan's Column in Roman. Bruno got on his knees and bowed down to the typography on it. Saying its some on the best typography in the world.

Later that day we had Matt Pykes lecture. Matt Pyke founded up Universal Everything. Matt talked about how he set up his company and how he came up with the idea of not to be based in an office, but to have a collaboration of different artists based from all around the world working off a network. His idea to have illustrators, graphic artist, web designs, programmes etc... has been a huge inspiration, because you can get people to help you with your works. Matt talked about starting his career and to where he is now. some companies Matt and Universal Everything have worked for include Nike, Apple, London 2012, Audi, MTV and Nokia. A few piece Matt collaborated on made him create a software to produced his work to get the finished piece like The Audi advert and the Nokia Store. His work was an eye opener as I have never heard of Universal Everything. His work Had a very fresh approach.
